Let’s talk about what to do when everything starts to feel… stuck.

Throughout our time in the field, we all hit that moment where we feel stagnant. Like we’re not growing. Not moving. Everything feels the same, every session, every week, every day. Nothing’s new, and suddenly the work that once lit us up just feels… mundane.

If you’re in this space right now, know that you’re not alone, and there are ways to get unstuck.

First, consider looking into additional training. Maybe there’s a niche you’ve always been interested in but don’t get to explore in your current work. When you’re disconnected from what excites you, it’s easy to lose your will to keep going. A fresh certification, new modality, or workshop might just reignite that passion.

Second, take time to reevaluate your current position. Ask yourself: Am I still happy here? If the answer is no, it might be time to peek at what’s out there. Browse job listings. Book a career coaching session. Explore other roles in the helping field. Just because you’ve been a therapist for years doesn’t mean that’s your forever path. Your passions evolve, and your career can too.

Reconnect with Your Why

Get back in tune with the reason you started.

When stagnation creeps in, it’s also a sign to pause, not power through. Take a break. Go on vacation. Or take a staycation. Even a few days off can give your mind space to breathe and help you reconnect with your “why.” Why did you enter this field? Why do you stay?

Remember: human nature is wired to seek pleasure. If you’re not getting any joy, satisfaction, or purpose from your work, it’s time to figure out what needs to shift.

Another sneaky contributor to stagnation? Unfinished projects. Maybe there’s something you started, a passion project, a workbook, a blog, a group idea, that’s been sitting on the back burner for way too long. These ideas collect dust, and with them comes a creeping sense of incompletion. So go blow off that dust. Pick one thing. What’s the next step? How can you bring it to life?

And finally, check in with you. Ask yourself:

  • Who am I right now?
  • What are my interests outside of work?
  • Have I gotten lost in my professional identity?

Sometimes we throw so much energy into being clinicians that our personal selves get neglected. The result? We start to feel empty, disconnected, and unsure of who we are outside of the therapy room.

Take time to reflect. Journal. Move your body. Reconnect with old hobbies. Explore new ones. You only get one life to live, and your time is precious.

You don’t have to stay stuck. Feeling stagnant doesn’t mean something is wrong, it just means something needs your attention. So honor the feeling, take a breath, and start the process of getting back in touch with you.
