Preparing for Thanksgiving: Supporting Clients Through Family Dynamics

As the holiday season approaches, many of our clients face the stress of navigating complex family dynamics. Thanksgiving, in particular, often brings heightened exposure to family members and situations that may trigger unresolved emotions. While clients may have made significant progress in therapy, we know that they cannot control how others behave. Family members may not have done the same inner work, leaving our clients to manage these interactions with grace and resilience.

Navigating Family Interactions and Setting Boundaries

At this time of year, it’s essential to help clients prepare for the possibility of facing family members who may not be the most healthy individuals to be around. While we don’t typically advocate for “canceling” family members or cutting people off indefinitely, we do encourage setting clear boundaries. Clients should feel empowered to assert their needs while also respecting their personal limits. If they find the situation too overwhelming, it’s important they know it’s okay to step away for their own mental well-being.

Equip your clients with the tools to manage challenging situations, whether it’s through boundary-setting, self-assertion, or giving themselves permission to leave triggering environments. Encouraging them to prioritize their mental health in these moments can make a huge difference.

Check-In Early to Equip Clients for the Holidays

The key to supporting clients during the holiday season is proactive preparation. Starting in early November, it’s a good idea to check in with your clients about any concerns or anxieties they may have regarding the holidays. Often, clients won’t bring up these issues until the week of Thanksgiving, which could leave both you and them without adequate time to prepare.

By addressing holiday stressors early, you give clients the chance to work through their worries and practice the coping skills they’ve developed in therapy. This early intervention also allows for more comprehensive preparation, helping clients feel more confident as they approach the holiday gatherings. It ensures they are better equipped to handle potentially triggering situations, assert their boundaries, and communicate their feelings in a respectful manner.
