Ah, springtime. The sun is shining, the flowers are blooming, and there’s a certain energy in the air that just makes everything feel lighter. But along with that seasonal joy comes something many of us therapists start to notice, a spike in client cancellations.
You’re not imagining it, this is a very real pattern. Clients get that extra burst of energy from sunshine and fresh air, and suddenly therapy feels less urgent. After all, when you’re feeling good and enjoying the outdoors, it’s easy to hit pause on emotional work.
Seasonal Slowdowns Are Normal
It’s completely normal for therapy sessions to slow down this time of year. Clients often reschedule or cancel on beautiful days, and on the flip side, rainy days can bring a surge in sessions. That classic “April showers bring May flowers” sentiment also applies to our schedules.
This can feel frustrating at times, especially if you’re just starting out in private practice. But remember: this fluctuation is temporary. Clients often come back once the excitement of spring fades or when challenges resurface. Therapy is a journey, and most clients know that.
Take It in Stride
Instead of feeling discouraged, take these slower moments as an opportunity to recharge or focus on the administrative side of your practice. Use the time to update notes or even enjoy a breath of fresh air yourself!
Most importantly, don’t take cancellations personally. The work you do matters, and your clients will return when they’re ready to dive back in.
Happy Spring! And here’s to warmer days, clearer minds, and the rhythm of the seasons
