As clinicians, we’re not immune to anxiety. Just because we understand its symptoms, causes, and treatment doesn’t mean we’re exempt from feeling it ourselves. In fact, we often carry a unique kind of emotional weight. Between managing the needs of our clients, supporting our families, and holding space for everyone else, we often forget to care for one very important person, ourselves.

We know what to do. We teach others what to do. But carving out time to manage our own mental health, especially through exercise, can feel like a luxury. It shouldn’t be, caring for yourself is just as essential as showing up for your clients. Think of exercise as another kind of appointment, like renewing your license or taking your child to a medical checkup. It’s a priority.

Exercise is Medicine

You don’t need to train for a marathon or commit to intense fitness routines. What matters is simply moving. Walk, stretch, dance, jog, just get your body in motion. Regular physical activity has been proven to reduce anxiety, improve breathing, boost circulation, and most importantly, lift your mood.

Anxiety, left unchecked, can impact not only our work but our relationships, our energy, and our ability to feel joy. A small investment of time in exercise each day can lead to better focus, a clearer head, and a calmer presence both in session and at home.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Life gets busy. We tell ourselves we’ll make time later, when the schedule slows down, when the caseload lightens. But that rarely happens. And the truth is, exercise is often the first thing to get pushed aside when we’re overwhelmed. Yet as our bodies age and demands increase, staying active becomes even more essential, not just for our mental health, but for our longevity and ability to keep doing this work we love.

You can’t give your best if you’re running on empty. Prioritizing your physical health isn’t just about fitness, it’s about mental clarity, emotional resilience, and living with intention. Take care of you. Be the kind of clinician who not only teaches wellness but lives it too.
